Why Should You Vlog?

Here at EpicTech we recently started our own vlog. The first question at the office was, who is going to do them? As with most companies, none of the team was particularly keen. We all make videos for a living, but this and being in one, as it turns out, are two completely different skills!

So I drew the short straw. I do a lot of networking and oversee most of the day to day customer service. The idea of the vlog was to help us grow our relationships with customers, so apparently, I was the ‘logical choice to feature in the videos, as one of the more visible members of the team’.

But why spend time creating a vlog?

Aside from the fact that we were, for a while, a video production company that didn’t use video to market itself, there are several reasons that we decided to invest the time and effort in creating vlogs.

Firstly, it’s a great way to build our online presence. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and owned by the largest. All told, YouTube is bigger than Bing, Yahoo, Ask and AOL combined. This means that getting video content on YouTube will make us more visible online.

It also gives us the opportunity to be found by more people that need our services. As many a business coach will tell you, businesses exist to solve their customers’ problems. And what do you do when you need to solve a problem? You google it of course! Videos perform well in search results, meaning videos enable us to get the business in front of more potential clients.

Video is also a great way of communicating our companies personality and branding, helping to build relationships with our clients. Helping my network by giving them valuable tips and advice enables them to develop their online marketing and grow their business, whilst allowing me to demonstrate my expertise.

And if all that wasn’t enough, Cisco estimate that by 2021 video will be responsible for 82% of all internet traffic. This means if you’re not using video, you’re limiting yourself to just 18% of all internet traffic for your online marketing. Online marketing is already extremely competitive, so we think it’s important to use as much of the different formats available to you as possible.

Judge for yourself!

Director, EpicTech Media

I take on the role of Production Supervisor at EpicTech Media, overseeing all of our projects from script to screen.

I try and ensure that every project i work on is rooted in two things, audience and story. A good video, in my view, connects the two.

Outside of work i'm a sucker for model railways and a good game of racketball!
